How I Use AI to Find $400 a Month in Hidden Savings (Even If You've Never Touched ChatGPT)

I'm 57. I've been running my own business for 25 years. And until about a year ago, I was overpaying for almost everything.

Cable. Cell phone. Insurance. Subscriptions I forgot I'd signed up for. Prescriptions I could have bought cheaper across the street.

Not because I was lazy. Because there just aren't enough hours in a day to audit every corner of your financial life.

Then I started using AI. And the amount of money I've found sitting in plain sight is honestly a little embarrassing.

This post is exactly what I do. The prompts. The screenshots. The scripts. All copy-paste. All free. Beginner-friendly.

If you've been curious about ChatGPT but felt like it wasn't "for you" - this is your on-ramp.

First, Let Me Kill the Fear

Only about 20% of people over 50 use AI regularly, according to recent research. And when non-users are asked why, the number one answer isn't "I don't want to." It's "I don't understand how it works."

That's it. That's the whole barrier.

So let me clear it up in one paragraph:

ChatGPT is a website (chatgpt.com) where you type a question and it answers you like a helpful person. That's the whole thing. It's free. You don't download anything. You don't set up anything complicated. You go to the site, sign up with your email, and start typing.

If you can send a text message, you can use ChatGPT.

Now let's put it to work.

Prompt #1: The Subscription Audit (This Alone Usually Finds $50–$150/Month)

Here's the first thing I do every quarter.

I pull up my last 60 days of bank and credit card transactions, remove the account number and personal details, then paste the transactions into ChatGPT with this prompt:

Copy-paste prompt:

I am going to paste a list of my recent bank and credit card transactions. I want you to identify every recurring subscription or auto-renewing charge you can find. Please group them into three categories: 1) Streaming and entertainment. 2) Software, apps, and memberships. 3) Any charges that look suspicious or that I may have forgotten about. For each one, tell me the estimated monthly cost. At the end, tell me the total monthly amount I'm spending on subscriptions.

Then I paste the transactions.

ChatGPT sorts through everything in about 15 seconds. It catches subscriptions I completely forgot about. Free trials that started charging. Duplicate services (I was paying for two grammar checkers, don't ask).

A safety note before you do this: never paste your account numbers, Social Security number, or passwords. Just the transaction descriptions and amounts. The rule is simple - if you'd write it on a public napkin, it's safe to paste.

The first time I ran this prompt, I found $87 a month in subscriptions I wasn't using. That's over $1,000 a year, just sitting there.

Prompt #2: The Bill Negotiation Script (Cable, Cell, Internet)

Cable and cell companies count on you not calling. Most people don't. Which is why they charge you $30–$60 a month more than they charge new customers for the exact same service.

Here's the prompt I use before every negotiation call:

Copy-paste prompt:

I want to call my [cable / internet / cell phone] company and negotiate a lower bill. My current monthly bill is $[amount] and I have been a customer for [X years]. Write me a polite but firm negotiation script that includes: 1) A confident opener. 2) Specific things to ask for (rate reductions, loyalty discounts, retention offers). 3) What to say if they refuse the first time. 4) When and how to ask for a supervisor. 5) The exact phrase that usually works to get a real discount. Keep the tone respectful but direct.

ChatGPT hands you a full script. You read it out loud on the call. That's it.

I've used this three times in the last year. Cut my internet bill by $22 a month. Cut my cell bill by $18 a month. That's $40 a month right there, or $480 a year, from two 15-minute phone calls.

The script does the hard part. You just have to read it.

Prompt #3: The Insurance Comparison

Insurance quotes are designed to be confusing. Different deductibles, different coverage limits, different fine print. Most people just pick the middle option and hope for the best.

Here's what I do instead. When I get two or three quotes, I paste them into ChatGPT:

Copy-paste prompt:

I am comparing [auto / home / health / Medicare Supplement] insurance quotes. I am going to paste the details of two or three policies. Please compare them in plain English. Tell me: 1) Which one has the best actual value for me. 2) What the biggest coverage differences are. 3) Any red flags in the fine print. 4) What questions I should ask each provider before I decide. Explain like you are talking to a friend, not a policyholder.

That's it. In one minute, you get a plain-English comparison that would have cost you $150 with a broker.

According to AARP research, more than two-thirds of older Americans say prices are rising faster than their income. Which means every dollar you save on insurance is a dollar that doesn't disappear into inflation this year.

This prompt has saved me an average of $600 a year on my car insurance alone.

Prompt #4: The Hidden Medical Bill Audit

Medical bills are notorious for containing charges that shouldn't be there. Duplicate billing. Codes for services you never received. Fees that were supposed to be covered by insurance.

Here's the prompt I use to catch them:

Copy-paste prompt:

I am going to paste a copy of a medical bill or explanation of benefits. Please review it and flag any charges that look questionable, duplicated, or worth appealing. Explain in plain English what each questionable charge might mean. Then write me a short, polite script I can use to call the billing department and ask about them.

Medical billing audits used to require a paid patient advocate. Now you can do it in about 4 minutes for free.

I caught a $340 duplicate charge on an ER bill for my mom last year using this exact prompt. The hospital removed it without a fight.

Prompt #5: The Prescription Price Check

This one is fast and it works every single time.

If you take any regular medication, paste this into ChatGPT:

Copy-paste prompt:

I take [medication name] at [dosage]. Please tell me: 1) The typical retail price at major pharmacies. 2) Whether there is a generic version and how much cheaper it is. 3) Any manufacturer coupons or patient assistance programs I might qualify for. 4) Whether apps like GoodRx or SingleCare typically beat the insurance copay on this medication. Give me the top 3 ways I could realistically pay less for this prescription right now.

ChatGPT gives you the landscape in 20 seconds. Then you can price-check that pharmacy against what you're actually paying.

I've had readers cut a monthly prescription bill from $180 to $28 by running this prompt and then walking into a different pharmacy with a coupon they didn't know existed.

Add It All Up

Subscriptions found: $50–$150/month
Bills renegotiated: $40–$80/month
Insurance rechecked: $50/month average
Medical bills audited: highly variable, but a single catch can save $300+
Prescriptions optimized: $40–$150/month

Total realistic monthly savings for someone who runs these five prompts once: $180–$430 a month.

Or roughly $2,200 to $5,000 a year. From an hour of asking a chatbot the right questions.

That's not budgeting. That's not cutting back on lattes. That's not selling anything you love. That's just finding money you were losing to companies who counted on you not looking.

The Rule I Live By With AI

I use AI as a research assistant, not a decision-maker.

It finds the leaks. I decide what to do about them.
It writes the negotiation scripts. I make the phone calls.
It flags the charges. I file the appeals.

AI is not going to run your life. But it will absolutely help you stop overpaying for it.

FAQ

Can I use ChatGPT if I've never used AI before?
Yes. Go to chatgpt.com, sign up with your email, and start typing. If you can send a text, you can use it.

Is ChatGPT safe for financial information?
Never paste account numbers, Social Security numbers, or passwords. But bill totals, insurance quotes, and general spending info are fine. Rule: if you'd write it on a public napkin, it's safe to paste.

How much money can AI actually help me save?
Between negotiating bills, canceling forgotten subscriptions, price-checking prescriptions, and comparing insurance quotes, most people over 50 find $200 to $500 a month on the first pass.

Do I need to pay for ChatGPT Plus?
No. The free version handles every prompt in this article.

Now you have it.
