GoHighLevel Missed Call Text Back: What I'd Set Up First

October 13, 2026

Most mornings I walk our two dogs before I touch the laptop. Two leashes and a coffee I have no business carrying, on a stretch of Largo sidewalk where both of them decide one squirrel is the biggest news of the year. That is exactly when my phone buzzes in my back pocket. A local number. No name. By the time I'm back in the kitchen there's no voicemail, just a little gray missed call and that nagging feeling that somebody wanted something.

That feeling is why GoHighLevel missed call text back is the first automation I'd turn on in any account. When a call to your GoHighLevel number goes unanswered, the system texts that person within seconds, so the conversation keeps going while you're out walking the dogs. It's a short workflow you can build in one sitting. The whole trick is a text that sounds like you and asks one easy question.

In 25 years I have never watched a sale die from too much honest follow-up. I have watched thousands die from none. A missed call is the quietest version of none. Nobody did anything wrong. The phone rang, life was happening, and the person on the other end moved on to the next name in their search results.

Why calling back doesn't work like it used to

Think about how you treat your own phone. Pew Research found that eight in ten Americans don't generally answer when an unknown number calls, and 67% let it ring and only check voicemail if one gets left. That's us. We screen everything.

Now flip it around. The woman who called you at 8:15 is busy by 10. When you call back, you're the interruption, and your number might be the one she doesn't recognize. You leave a voicemail. She leaves you one. By Thursday it's phone tag and the moment is gone.

A text waits for her. She can answer from the checkout line or from the couch at 9 p.m. with zero pressure. I'd rather get a two-word reply today than a callback I can't return until Thursday.

How to set up missed call text back in GoHighLevel

GoHighLevel gives you two ways to do this. There's a built-in missed call text back setting, and there's a workflow. The setting works. I'd build the workflow anyway, because you control what happens after that first text, and what happens after is where follow-up actually lives.

One thing before you start: this only works on calls that come in through your GoHighLevel number. If people dial your personal cell directly, the system never sees the miss. Most people put the GoHighLevel number on the website and business cards and forward it to their cell.

  1. Get your A2P 10DLC registration done first. If you text U.S. numbers from a regular local number, HighLevel says registration is required. Approval isn't instant, so start today and build the rest while you wait.
  2. Create a new workflow from scratch and add the Call Details trigger (older tutorials call it Call Status). Set the direction to incoming and the status to not answered. I'd add voicemail too, because a voicemail is still a call you missed.
  3. Add a Send SMS action with your text. Keep it under 160 characters so it lands as one message.
  4. Add a wait of 20 minutes, then an if/else that checks whether they replied. If they did, the workflow stops and you take it from there. If they didn't, have it create a task for you to call them back that day.
  5. Turn it on, grab your cell, and call your own business number. Don't answer. When your phone buzzes with your own text, you're live.

Notice what I didn't put in there. No three-day drip of automated texts to someone who called you once. One text from the machine, then a human. That's my rule.

The text I'd actually send

This is where most people blow it. They write something that sounds like a hold recording: "Thank you for contacting us. Your call is important. A representative will reach out shortly." Nobody answers that, because there's nothing in it to answer.

Every message ends in one question. That's the rule in my follow-up system, and it matters even more here because this person doesn't know you yet. Give them one honest line about why you missed them and one question they can answer with their thumb.

For the middle of the day: "Hi, it's Donna. Sorry I missed you, I was with someone. What can I help you with?"

When you know why most people call: "Hey, this is Donna Valdes. Didn't want you waiting on a callback. Is this about getting started, or something else?"

After hours: "Hi, Donna here. I'm done for the night but saw you called. Want me to call you in the morning, or is text easier?"

Swap in your name and your words. Say "y'all" if you'd say y'all. A text that reads like a corporate template needs another pass, until it sounds like you standing in your kitchen. And if you want AI drafting in your voice instead of robot voice, my $7 AI Hacks guide has the exact prompts and frameworks I use to train it to write like me.

Where AI fits, and where I keep it out

GoHighLevel has AI that can answer texts for you, and I get the appeal. I use AI every day to draft follow-up. I'm still careful about letting a bot carry a conversation with someone who called because they wanted a person.

Turn it on and give it small jobs, like your hours and the booking link. The minute someone asks a real question about their situation, a human should answer. People can tell, and the ones who can tell are usually the ones you most wanted to talk to.

If you're still tracking people in a spreadsheet, that's fine. I said in my follow-up post that the sheet works until about 150 people or until you stop opening it. Missed call text back is a good first reason to graduate, and if you want to see what else the platform replaces, I broke that down in GoHighLevel for solopreneurs. The Starter plan is $97 a month with a 14-day trial as of October 2026. If you want to try it, this is my GoHighLevel link. I'm a HighLevel affiliate and earn a commission if you sign up through it, at no extra cost to you.

Pair the text back with the follow-up scripts I shared for the conversations that come after, and the front door is handled. If you'd rather have someone look at your setup with you, tell me what you're working with.

Back on the sidewalk

I'm not giving up the morning walk. The dogs would never forgive me, and it's the best thinking time I get all day.

That's the version I want for you. Phone buzzes, you keep walking. By the time you're back in the kitchen, the person who called already has a friendly text asking what they need, and maybe they've already answered. Nobody who reached out got left hanging, and you didn't have to juggle a leash and a coffee to make that happen.

Questions people ask me about missed call text back

Is missed call text back legal?

It's a reply to someone who just called you, which is about as warm as a text gets. You still need A2P 10DLC registration to text U.S. numbers from a local number, and the first text should be a reply, not a promo. If your industry has extra rules, ask an attorney. I'm not one.

Does missed call text back work with my cell phone number?

Only if the call comes through your GoHighLevel number first. Put that number on your website and cards and forward it to your cell. That way GoHighLevel can see when a call goes unanswered and send the text.

How much does GoHighLevel missed call text back cost?

The feature comes with GoHighLevel. The Starter plan is $97 a month as of October 2026, and texting carries small per-message carrier fees plus A2P registration costs. Check HighLevel's pricing page before you start, since fees change.

Should I let AI answer the texts instead of me?

Let AI help you write the first text and handle simple stuff like hours or a booking link. When someone asks a real question, answer it yourself. They called because they wanted a person, so give them one.
