How I Run My Business With 22 Employees (Only One Is Human)

November 01, 2026

I read it standing in the laundry room, phone in one hand, a warm towel in the other. Somebody had left a comment under my AI team video: "you're not one of the human employees are you"

I laughed so loud the dog came running to check on me. Then I stood there holding that towel and thought, well, that's the whole story right there. I'm the human. The only one.

An AI team for small business owners like me is a group of AI tools where each one has a single job, written rules and a boss. Mine has 22 of them. One writes my morning brief before I've finished my coffee. Another finds the people closest to buying and drafts my next message to each of them. Nothing goes out with my name on it until I approve it, and you don't need to be technical to build one. You need one job you're tired of carrying.

How a 57-year-old who isn't a tech person ended up with 22 employees

I restarted my business at 57. Before that I spent 25 years in direct sales and network marketing, and years running operations and teams inside companies. I know how to build an org chart. I know what happens when nobody owns a job. What I didn't have this time was payroll.

So I didn't start with a big plan. I started with one task I kept doing myself because doing it felt faster than explaining it. I wrote down exactly how I do it, step by step, the way I'd train a new assistant. I handed that page to AI and fixed what came back. Then I fixed it again. When it was right, I picked the next task.

That's the whole secret: one job at a time. Somewhere along the way I looked up and had a team.

Meet a few of my AI employees

Yes, I named them. You name the people you work with, don't you? Claire writes my morning brief and flags what needs my attention that day, so I'm not digging through twelve places with my coffee going cold. Wendy finds the people closest to buying and writes my next message to each one. Sofia drafts my social posts for the week.

Every one of them has a name, a schedule, a written job description, and somebody they report to. That somebody is me. They clock in before I'm out of my robe, and they never call in sick. They also never get the final say.

Most owners haven't gotten here yet, and that's not a knock. In a Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses survey of 1,256 owners in early 2026, 76% said they use AI, but only 14% said it's fully built into their core operations. Lots of chatting with it. Very little handing it a real job. The Census Bureau counts it even lower: 19.8% of U.S. businesses reported using AI in any business function as of May 2026.

What makes AI an employee

Most people meet AI as a chat box. You type a question, get a so-so answer, and decide it isn't for you. I get it. I've had plenty of so-so answers myself.

An AI employee is set up differently. It does one job, the same steps every time, on a schedule, with written rules about what it can and can't do. Then it hands the work back to a person. You stay the CEO. AI becomes the support staff you couldn't afford to hire.

If you want it to sound like you, teach it your voice first. I wrote up how I make ChatGPT sound like me with a one-page voice doc, and every one of my AI employees works from something like it.

Building an AI team for small business: where I'd start

Pick the job that eats your time and follows the same steps every time. For a lot of us that's follow-up messages, or turning one idea into a week of posts. If you're behind on follow-up, my 2-7-21 follow-up rhythm is a good first job to hand off. If you run on GoHighLevel, a missed call text back is about the simplest AI employee you'll ever set up.

Write the job down the way you'd explain it to a brand-new assistant on her first day. What she does, when she does it, where she puts the work, and what she must never do. That page is your first hire.

This is exactly what we'll do together on Thursday, Nov 5 at 7 PM ET. I'll show you my AI org chart live, job by job, and you'll set up your first AI employee before we hang up. It's free. Save your seat for the AI Team Masterclass here.

The rule that keeps my AI team in line

My AI employees draft and queue. I approve every send, every post and every price change. AI will make up a number with a straight face if you let it, so a person reads everything before it goes out with my name on it. That person is me, and I'm not handing that job to anybody.

I have three rules that keep the whole team in check, and I'll walk through all three on Thursday. That one is the big one.

Relationships stay mine too. Wendy can write the message, but the woman on the other end is talking to me. If she calls, I pick up.

So, am I one of the human employees?

I folded that towel, put the phone down, and thought about the woman I was at 57 when I started over. She was worried she was too late and not techy enough. She didn't need to be either one. She needed to know how to run a team, and she already did.

So yes, I'm the human. The only one. I decide what goes out with my name on it and who gets a call. My AI employees handle the remembering and the typing.

Come watch me pull back the curtain on Thursday, Nov 5 at 7 PM ET, live on Zoom. It's free, and you'll leave with your first AI employee set up and working. The replay won't stay up long, so come live. Save my free seat.

Questions people ask me about AI teams

What is an AI team for a small business?

It's a set of AI tools where each one has one job, written rules and a person it reports to. One might write your morning summary, another might draft follow-up messages. The owner approves the work before anything goes out.

Is the AI Team Masterclass really free?

Yes. It's a free live class on Zoom, Thursday, Nov 5, 2026 at 7 PM Eastern. The Zoom link comes by email after you register, and the replay is short-lived, so plan to come live.

I'm over 50 and not techy. Is this for me?

It was built for you. I'm 57, and I learned this one job at a time. If you can explain a task to a new assistant, you can do this.

Will AI post or send things without me?

Not the way I set it up. My AI employees draft and queue, and I approve every send, post and price change. You stay the boss.
